The Human Thermoregulation and Microvascular Research Laboratories are seeking volunteers for the following studies:

H2S Study

Cutaneous vascular effects of hydrogen sulfide (IRB# 43891)

This study has one screening visit and 2-4 experiments.

  • Males and Females, ages 18-90
  • Nonsmoker
  • Women: Not pregnant, breastfeeding, on hormone therapy or birth control pills, patches, shots or rings

Dairy Study

Milk and Cheese Consumption and Human Microvascular Function (IRB# 44398)

This study has 12 visits over 3 months.

  • Males and Females, ages 55-75
  • Nonsmoker
  • No allergy to dairy, rice, soy, or wheat
  • No illegal or recreational drugs
  • No drugs that may alter the function of blood vessels (e.g. heart, blood pressure, and/or cholesterol medications)
  • Women: Not pregnant, breastfeeding, on hormone therapy or birth control pills, patches, shots or rings

Nosi Study

The NOS isoforms mediating local heating-induced cutaneous VD, and NOS gene-expression and activity in humans with essential hypertension (IRB# 30944)

  • Males and Females, ages 40-75
  • Diagnosed with high blood pressure
  • Taking doctor-prescribed blood pressure medication
  • Not taking other medication that can influence cardiovascular function (e.g. cholesterol lowering drugs)
  • Non-smoker
  • No illegal/recreational drugs

Neurovascular responses to reflex cooling in essential hypertensive humans (IRB# 43666)

This study has up to three screening visits and 4-5 visits for experiments that take place over 3-4 months.

Local Heating Study

Thermoregulatory Mechanisms of Nitric Oxide-Mediated Cutaneous Vasodilation in Mild Essential Hypertensive Humans (IRB# 32274)

  • 4-6 visits
  • Normal blood pressure or mildly high blood pressure, but no drugs that may alter the function of blood vessels (e.g. heart, blood pressure, and/or cholesterol medications)
  • Women: Not pregnant, breastfeeding, on hormone therapy or birth control pills, patches, shots or rings
